“I knew it was something we had to handle,” says DuVernay. In one gripping sequence, King’s marital tensions come to the fore when the FBI sends his wife Coretta (Carmen Ejogo) a tape of her husband, apparently with another woman. Otherwise, go watch a documentary.” He had been hesitant to dig into the project, he says, until the director “put so much meat on the bone,” challenging him to create an original character rather than ventriloquize an icon. What you want, in playing a character like Dr. “Not to denigrate the speech, but it’s a bit like doing a karaoke song. “It’s like doing ‘To be or not to be,'” he says. Oyelowo, a trained Shakespearean actor, found an advantage in skipping King’s most famous refrain. King gave that speech at the March on Washington 18 months earlier, and though he would later reprise elements of it, his tone in Selma is far less optimistic. And its time frame–the early months of 1965–means there’s no triumphant “I Have a Dream” moment. It has more to say about the messy business of political organization than it does about King. But it’s all the more impressive that the movie denies easy gratification. That Selma came together at all after years on hold is remarkable. “Less than a year from script to theaters is a little accelerated,” she says. It was only after Lee Daniels dropped out of a long-gestating King biopic that DuVernay came aboard, on Oyelowo’s recommendation.ĭuVernay, who reshaped screenwriter Paul Webb’s script before production began, says she was still rewriting in December 2013. But her film was overshadowed that year by Beasts of the Southern Wild, a fantastical tale about black life in the South. She directed the sensitive Middle of Nowhere (2012), co-starring Oyelowo, about a young woman dealing with her husband’s incarceration, which won her a Best Director prize at Sundance. The director spent many years as a publicist, marketing awards-ready movies–often made by white directors–to the black community, including Invictus, The Help and Dreamgirls. (The other was Annie’s Quvenzhané Wallis.) The Screen Actors Guild’s 20 nominees were all white.ĭuVernay and Oyelowo both toiled in relative obscurity before Selma. Oyelowo, who appeared last year in supporting roles in Interstellar and A Most Violent Year, was one of only two black actors nominated for the 30 movie-acting slots at this year’s Golden Globes. DuVernay is the first black woman to be nominated for the Best Director prize at the Golden Globes expectations are high that she will break the same barrier when nominations are announced on Jan. The cast and crew of Selma began breaking boundaries even before the film was released. “We wanted to stay close to what happened–a dynamic leader who was at times depressed and let his ego get in control.” “We were not doing a sainted version of him or an overcorrected, antihero version of him–both of which are scripts that have floated around,” DuVernay says. The film’s tight focus on the Selma marches–with their climax on “Bloody Sunday,” when 600 marchers assembled on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and were met with the nightsticks, tear gas and charging horses of Sheriff Jim Clark and his deputies–allows it to closely follow tactical debates among King’s uneasy collaborators and between King and Lyndon Johnson (Tom Wilkinson), who urges the civil rights leader to proceed with greater caution, insisting that change would come incrementally. While his obvious opponents were white-supremacist voters and politicians, he also faced challenges from erstwhile allies, including the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which had grown impatient with his tactics, as well as a complicated presidential partner in Washington. Selma addresses King’s legacy not by putting him on a pedestal but by showing him frustrated and beleaguered. Films with African-American protagonists are not first on the list of things to do.” “Let’s not even list the biopics that we’ve had,” she says, “but not one about one of the most famous and influential Americans who changed the way we all behave and live. King’s absence from theaters is “a jaw dropper,” says DuVernay. Directed by Ava DuVernay and starring David Oyelowo, it examines a pivotal period in the last four years of King’s life, the three voting-rights marches he organized from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., that ultimately led to the passage of the landmark Voting Rights Act in 1965. 9–is the first full-length film to take a deep look at King or make him the main character. Nearly 50 years after King’s death in 1968, Selma–which was released in selected cities Dec. There are simply a handful of cameos in biopics about other people, such as Ali and Lee Daniels’ The Butler. The most surprising thing about the history of Hollywood and Martin Luther King Jr.

They also carried out extensive trade with the nearby Ancient Puebloans, Mogollon, and Sinagua, as well as with the more distant Mesoamerican civilizations. At times they just feed quietly on gum nuts in the upper foliage and you only notice them from the sound of the pattering of gum nut fragments as you walk underneath. Although they often move about in groups, unlike the other more noisy cockatoos they are often fairly quiet. Their breast, cheeks, and throalored gray, and their flight feathers are blue. Adult Quakers have bright green colors on their head, wings, and back. Their origin lies in South America, notably Argentina. One of its distinctive calls is a creaking sound that identifies it easily. The Quaker parrot (Myiopsitta monachus) is called the Quaker parakeet, monk parrot, and monk parakeet. The male gang-gang has a slate-grey body with a bright scarlet red head. They have a bouncing acrobatic flight and feed on seeds, mostly from the ground. In spite of their colour, they are more closely related to Galahs than they are to the Black Cockatoos. Gang-gang cockatoos are small sized grey cockatoos with a soft wispy crest. They are easy to identify with their distinctive pink and grey plumage. Male forest red tails have bright orange-red band in the tail and their bill is dark grey or blackish. This gray-blue bird has a head crest, black spot above the beak, a light belly and a hint of orange along their sides under the wing. Taxonomically they are in a separate genus from the other cockatoos (Callocephalon). They are easily identified by their bright red tail. The gentle tweeting of the Tufted Titmouse is a welcome wake-up call in the eastern United States, where they live year-round. Males can be distinguished by their distinctive red head with its wispy crest. Wolkoff also details the efforts she and, allegedly, Melania took to block the President’s daughter Ivanka Trump from appearing in photos of the President’s swearing-in ceremony. In her book, Wolkoff describes the inauguration planning as a slapdash effort, claiming that the incoming President didn’t understand who was behind organizing the event. During her time working for the East Wing, Wolkoff was a special government employee, meaning she was not paid for her services.Īs investigations into the inaugural activities unfolded, Wolkoff’s relationship with the first lady unraveled, prompted by the amount of money Wolkoff and her events firm allegedly pocketed during the planning and execution of the inauguration, according to CNN. She was also Trump’s first hire for the East Wing, acting as senior adviser to the first lady, writing speeches and helping craft what would become the “Be Best” platform. Wolkoff, a former Vogue magazine staffer who oversaw high-dollar events, had known Melania Trump for more than a decade when she was hired to organize the planning of President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Wolkoff’s book, “Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady,” details the fallout from Wolkoff’s working and personal relationship with Melania Trump, including private conversations between the two. Wolkoff told CNN in a statement she “will not be deterred by these bullying tactics.” It also says that neither the first lady, her chief of staff nor the White House counsel’s office received a draft of the book from Wolkoff and that the former adviser never sought authorization to disclose details of her work for the first lady.ĬNN has reached out to the Justice Department for comment. The complaint asserts that Wolkoff violated a nondisclosure agreement and asks for profits from the book to be secured in a government trust. The post-mortem report detailed Nilsen's cause of death as a pulmonary embolism and retroperitoneal hemorrhage. Nilsen died two days later on May 12, 2018, having served 34 years of his full-life sentence. He was found to have a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm which was repaired but he later suffered a blood clot as a complication of the stomach surgery. Read more Who Was the Real Dennis Nilsen? David Tennant Plays Scottish Serial Killer Nilsen had been serving his life sentence at Her Majesty's Prison Full Sutton when he was taken to hospital on complaining of severe stomach pains. He was 72-years-old at the time of his death. How did Dennis Nilsen die?ĭennis Nilsen died in York Hospital on May 12, 2018. He joined the likes of killers Stephen Port, Christopher Halliwell, and Peter Sutcliffe. Nilsen was one of a growing list of British criminals who have received a whole life tariff, meaning he would never be released from prison. He was jailed for life in 1983 with a recommendation he serve a minimum of 25 years after being convicted of six counts of murder and two of attempted murder. The documentary features recordings made by Dennis Nilsen from his prison cell, where he details his life and the horrific crimes he committed in the late 1970s and early 1980s.īetween 19, Nilsen, murdered at least 12 young men and potentially many more at two addresses in North London. He’s previously known for Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer, another great documentary.Memories of a Murder: The Nilsen Tapes is the latest true-crime documentary on Netflix you do not want to miss. If you recognized the director, Michael Harte, you might expect this. He was a calculated, cruel creep of a man who knew exactly what he was doing.Ĭontent-wise, it is explicit, so there are grueling images and very descriptive language. It becomes clear that Nilsen wanted a trial, he wanted fame and drama. This implies that Nilsen had a very distorted view of himself. Stories like this are so fascinating, but how true are they? In parts of the documentary, we have a police officer talking about Nilsen as a person and then we have Nilsen “typing” on the typewriter, a complete contradiction. Apparently, in the army, he would cover himself with powder and imagine himself as a dead body. Nilsen was a police officer and he’d been in the army. Whilst this is about Nilsen, we are also given a detailed insight into London in that era.ĭelving into Nilsen’s past, the documentary discusses his childhood and we try to unravel, as we always do, what makes someone a serial killer. However, the way in which this is directed, I would say this is not really about Nilsen’s memories, but memories about Nilsen. It isn’t distracting to the average viewer, but I found it a little over the top and unnecessary. Everyone interviewed is interviewed in dark, dingy rooms, probably to resemble Nilsen’s dark and dank apartment. We hear stories and accounts from police, journalists, survivors, and bereaved families in the documentary, recalling what happened during the investigation. He targeted “rent-boys” and gay men knowing that they would fall into the ether of London. That’s probably one thing that stood out for me and has stayed with me. Heartbreakingly, a lot of the victims weren’t even recorded missing therefore no one was looking for them. Here, we have a killer who claimed he didn’t know the victims, so the police have to find the identity of the victims. What makes this different or makes it stand out is that usually we have a victim and the hunt is to find the killer. It’s clear he thought himself to be very important and wants to go down as some sort of king in British crime history. In this documentary we hear recordings from cassette tapes Nilsen made in prison, allowing him to narrate and tell his story. For me, this delivered on every level, I wanted it to be great, it exceeded even my very high expectations, 10/10. Lots of little titbits for long term fans of the show. Additional Footage: Missing Allen/Tangram Films. This episode doesnt appear to be available from any streaming services. Originally aired on NBC on February 25, 2005. A story of how an act of love caught a killer. When police come up with no answers, Allen’s friends and family devise a plan of their own to help solve the mystery. The BBC has promised a lot in its hundredth year, Silent Witness feels like the start of that, hopefully this is the standard going forward, I thought this was fantastic. In this Dateline classic, Dennis Murphy reports on the disappearance of filmmaker Allen Ross. A fun night out with friends in Green Bay, Wisconsin turns tragic when a young mom named Nikki Vanderheyden goes missing. I know you shouldn't really comment on appearances, but how much training has David Caves been doing, he's looking in incredible shape. Are they veering more towards The Line of Duty style series? Production values are incredibly high, it looks fantastic, the visuals and music are truly on point. An intriguing mystery, I really did enjoy it, I loved the scale of it. I am wondering if this is going to turn into a story of old Vs new, will it develop into a battle between Nikki and Sam? It'll be interesting to see how this format works, a six part story instead of the usual two part stories. There is no denying the presence Burton has, she elevated this. Amanda Burton, looking fantastic, it was almost as if Dr Ryan hadn't been away, she stepped back into the role perfectly, interesting to see the journey the character has been on. Ed Whitmore for my money has written arguably the show's best episodes, so it's no surprise that he penned this. They have gone all out for this one, and I don't just mean the return of the legendary Doctor Ryan. However, it quickly becomes apparent that the estate is suffering from major problems with gangs and knife crime.Following the shooting of a prominent Politician, Doctor San Ryan calls on The Lyell team to get to the bottom of what happened. Leo is pulled over for drink driving and has to undertake community service as a result, helping out in the running of a football club on an estate. Leo and Simon are able to work together, but their relationship becomes strained due to Simon's prior affair with Theresa. However, the detective investigating the case is Simon Rush. Leo is called to the scene of a boy whose body was found in a river. Leo eventually has a meeting with Harry and acknowledges that his behaviour has not been ideal, though he makes it clear to Harry that he should not tell him how to grieve. During this period, Leo's behaviour towards Harry and Nikki isn't ideal and this comes to a head when Leo snaps at Nikki when she is performing a post mortem. However, after three months he returned as he felt that he needed something to do (though he doesn't perform any post mortems). Learning this, Leo tries to obtain fake identification of his own, though he lies and says that his name is Harry Cunningham.įollowing the death of Theresa and Cassie, Leo took time off work for an indefinite period of time. After this, Leo becomes aware of a major criminal network operating in Sheffield that specialises in fraud and creating fake identification and that it may be the reason why the hit and run occurred. Leo goes through some of Cassie's possessions and discovers that she has managed to obtain fake identification. This affects Leo deeply and he ends up being involved in the case despite the fact that he shouldn't. When a hit and run occurs in Sheffield, Theresa and Cassie are killed as a result. As a result of the strain, Theresa has an affair with Simon Rush.Īfter Sam resigned, Leo was promoted to her position. The move put a strain on his relationship with Theresa and this comes to a head when she and Cassie travel to London to visit Leo. Leo moved down from Sheffield to London to take up a post working underneath Sam Ryan. During his time, he was involved in the investigation of serial killer Karl Bentley. Leo initially worked as a pathologist in Sheffield. In 1992, they would have a daughter, Cassie. The two would remain good friends for the rest of Sean's life. Leo would eventually go to university and while there he met Sean Delaney. While in sixth form, he met Theresa and would begin a relationship with her. Leo was born in England in 1957 and grew up in Sheffield. |
